My mom and I both look for comfort food from our roots. I spent the first 26 years of my life in Texas and my mom after moving around as an Army brat settled in Texas as well. We both bill the classic beef taco plate (#9) at El Potro “the taco of our childhood.” El Potro which is set in an unassuming strip mall in my mom’s neighborhood is a must every time I visit Orlando. Such a simple meal to prepare can no doubt change your mood and put a smile on your face. The tacos’s are delicious and I love me some refried beans. It must all be washed down with cold Negra Modelo for a little more south of the border flavor. Not exactly healthy, but in moderation these taco’s hit the spot.
The crispy taco in Tex-Mex style is no less than the food of the Gods. Although simple, the combination of seasoned beef, crisp lettuce, and grated cheese folding in a crispy corn tortilla is all I really need to achieve bliss. My search for the taco of my childhood is a never ending quest, like the knights templar searching for the grail. In Winter Park, fortunately, I have found bliss in the crispy taco dinner at El Potro. This neighborhood eatery is located in the K-Mart shopping plaza and is nothing fancy but they do deliver on the food. With hundreds of excellent dining choices close by, Emily always wants to hit El Potro when she’s in town and I am all too happy to oblige. The friendly service I really like, but the crispy tacos….that’s true love. Ask for the green sauce (the hot one) and get ready to get your crunch on! The side of beans and rice round out the dinner and a cold beer is recommended. I also recommend the tacos al carbon, the enchilada dinners, and the chili relleno.
